To Scoop, Or Not To Scoop
Posted by Simple Dude | Posted in Dog | Posted on 10-05-2012
When I was really young, we had a dog. Unfortunately she died when I was only 6 years old, but being the young age I was, I didn’t have a lot of responsibilities when it came to the dog. Or responsibilities for anything really. I went to school to learn basic stuff, did some pretty basic household chores like keeping my room clean, then the rest of the time I got to play with my friends. Damn that was a good life!
My mom and dad did all the work when it came to our dog. She would crap all over the yard (the dog, not my mom) and periodically my folks would have to go around picking up the poop.
This was the late 70′s and one thing I don’t remember about dogs back then, was people picking up dog poop OUTSIDE their yards. While walking your dog down the street, in a park area or even your neighbor’s yard, if a dog pooped somewhere outside your yard that was considered a win – because it was one less you’d have to pick up.
But things have changed. With our dog TOWPO (The One Who Poops Outside) we have to bring plastic baggies with us anytime we take her out of the yard just in case she makes a little brown deposit.

I wonder when this change took place? It had to have been in the last 30+ years. When did we start caring about what our dogs were leaving behind? Don’t get me wrong – having park areas free of poop is a very good thing – no one wants to see all that “crap” about.
Though I have to admit something. We’re friends right? Good. We live adjacent to a large pond with walking trails that are part of a system of trails that go on for miles – perfect for taking the dog out.
But if I take TOWPO out for a late evening walk on these trails, sometimes I leave the poop bags at home. I have discovered that my likelihood of picking up after her is directly related to the amount of light in the sky. If it’s early evening and the sun hasn’t set I’ll stop & scoop. But if it’s dark and no one is around to see it, the poop probably stays put.
I know what you’re thinking – I’m not doing my part to keep the neighborhood beautiful. Fortunately for my neighbors I don’t take the dog out late at night very often. But it is what it is.
I’ll leave you with some Simple Dude philosophy…. if a dog poops in the night, and no one is there to see it, does it even exist?
The answer: No. Not if it’s my dog.

We have two 80+ lb dogs that we walk at our local park and we follow the rule of…if its an area that people are playing around or a main sidewalk, we will pick it up… if its in the less traveled areas, we leave it

LoL! I do the same, but only because it’s virtually impossible to find a dark turd in the dark. The next time I’m out during the day I pick up an extra one to atone. Maybe I shouldn’t admit that either.
Great post, as always.

lmao @ the dog poop after dark riddle.
Luckily I moved out of my parent’s house long before picking up shit was the “in thing” and no longer have a dog. We have land up the mountains and the dogs run free. You just learn to look for “bombs”. I have never had to pick up after dog business and am pretty sure I’d straight up vomit at the heat through the bag. I’m gagging now thinking about it. If I was to get a dog you’d better believe I’m leaving that shit too!

I don’t know when this changed. Maybe after a politician stepped in dog poo at some fund raising event to fix up the local run down park. That might have been a turning point.
Stupid politicians. Part of life is getting the dog poo off your shoes at least once! GEEZ!

I feel lucky. I have a cat. He poops where he should. In the litter box. He is a Maine Coon cat, very large and goes out on a leash. Just saying…. LOL. Have a poopless day.

We have land mines all over our back yard from our yellow lab. I just can’t bring myself to do the pooper scooper thing.

My dog was a shy pooper. He hated being seen or looked at when he pooped so he’d back into bushes to make his deposits. Problem solved: no need to scoop since he’d taken care of it himself by tucking it away hidden under the bushes for the pervs to roll onto when they hid to stalk the school girls. I loved my dog…

I would say that if it’s in a publically accessible spot that is frequently travelled you should always scoop.
Growing up we always took our dogs into wooded parks and let them run off leash in the woods and forest. If the area is dense with trees and forestry, well, I’m betting deer poop is just as big as dog poop and no one scoops up their stuff. Manure is fertilizer so why the heck not contribute to a healthy forest environment.

Totally do this!!!! If there is no one in my vicinity (take that long look around the complex, peering around trees to make sure that the poop police don’t come jumping out) I let her finish then we make haste away from the crime!

Does anyone else remember the days when no one cared about dog poo? We didn’t have signs, laws or poop-Nazi’s watching our dog’s every move. I’ll admit I was pretty young, so maybe my memory is fuzzy, but i’m sure there was a time when we all did what sane people would do: let the poop lie.

Chihuahua poops? Ok.
Great Dane Poops? I don’t want that in my lawn…
I pick up, but I usually make sure the dog has pooped before we go for a walk. The benefits of having a back yard….

Don’t worry, it’ll eventually disintegrate.
Plus, it is good for the soil… and stuff.

Do you know how many times I’ve picked after my dog in the dark of night and even after reaching here and there come up empty handed. We are so thrilled when our dog would go in the weeds or deep in the woods. “Good Girl!”

I try to time it out so Scrappy needs to go when we’re in some generally deserted area so I can ignore it. Otherwise, I always have a baggy in my pocket. (BTW if it’s raining, the pocket is right where the baggy stays.)

We would always take the dogs for a walk out bush, it didn’t matter what they did after that

I’m with you…I am definitely guilty of the once-you-walk-ten-feet-past-the-poop-no-one-can-be-sure-that-the-poop-came-from-my-dog laziness that usually happens more often at night.

I suspect this may change if you ever step in someone else’s dogs poop. Until then, it’s all good.

I take that duty seriously. For me, time or the presence of other people should never be a factor if I will leave my dog’s poop lying around.

hope to engineer a dog that can eat a flaming paper bag without digesting it so that when you want to play that old trick on some unsuspecting neighbours, the poop comes out already in the bag.

Who cares? It’s just poop. It’s the one thing no one wants to talk about or see. Humping in public and talking about it? Oh, that’s fine, but no one mention poop. What’s a little dog poop. Once, just once, my dog pooped at the park. I congratulated him and went on with my day.

SD – to answer your question, yes there were was time when you didn’t have to pick up after your dog because I remember it, lol.

If you’re walking her in a wooded area, and it’s dark, I say let the poop lie.
