There Is No “Rushing” During Rush Hour
Posted by Simple Dude | Posted in Work | Posted on 31-05-2012
I hate rush hour traffic. It’s my least favorite thing about working.
I hate the idea of driving along at freeway speeds, only to slow to a near stop for seemingly no reason.
I hate the morons who bounce back and forth between lanes trying to get to their destination faster then everyone else. I have watched these people, sometimes for miles and all that stupid bouncing back and forth gets them to their exit just a couple car lengths ahead of where they were before. Meanwhile it pisses everyone off.
Sorry… had to get that off my chest. My commutes this week have been a bear. I moved in with my Lady Friend in about a year and a half ago. My old house was roughly 10 minutes from my job. But my Lady Friend’s house is roughly 30 minutes from my job when there is no traffic and often it takes much longer. That extra 20+ minute drive each way both sucks AND blows.
The weird thing that I will never understand is that the commute home is ALWAYS worse then the commute in to work. Do a lot of people only work in the afternoons? If so how the hell do I get that job?? But seriously, where are all those people in the mornings?
Though there seems to be a lot more cars driving home in the evening, the way the people drive in the mornings is worse – they are more aggressive. This is something else I don’t get. Why would they be in a bigger hurry to get to WORK then they are to get HOME? Maybe some of them work jobs where they punch clocks, but not the dudes driving a Cadillac or Lexus. There is no reason those people should be in that big of a hurry to get to work.
I’m the opposite. I’ll take my sweet ass time getting to work… they can deal with me getting there when I get there. But after work? Then I just want to get home.
After all, there is an ass imprint on my couch that is calling my name and all these a-holes jamming up the freeway are keeping me from it.
As much as I like to complain, my Lady Friend’s commute is worse than mine, so I definitely feel for her. We’re moving in about 3 weeks and the new place is 10+ minutes closer to both of our jobs, which is a great thing.
Is your afternoon commute worse than your morning one?
And for those of you living in small towns with NO traffic…… you stink.

Riding the push bike, takes about the same time to get to work, but I can walk around being smug. It is an awesome feeling and you can just piss people off. And some people don’t even know why they are angry!
Good fun

My commute is literally 2 traffic lights away. I can be there in 7 minutes…and that’s if I hit both red lights. Yup, you may hate me now. If it makes you feel any better it used to be 50 minutes prior to this job. The change was worth it JUST to avoid traffic!!

I stink now cause I live in a small town. I paid my dues in the St. Louis traffic, though – so there.

LOL, I can tell you why people are faster in the mornings, its because they are almost always running late. In Memphis every job I have ever had is a stickler for being at work ON TIME. I’m with you on the weaving in and out or passing on the emergency lane just to get a car of 2 ahead. That’s ridiculous and I just shake my head. On the way home, I think everyone is just tired from working all day. I don’t make any stops that aren’t necessary because I have an ass print in my sofa waiting for me too when I get home.

I used to have a 90 mile each way commute daily, yep 3 hours in the car for over 2 years. Not much traffic usually, just a long ass drive. Now I commute from my bedroom to the office in my house. I feel no guilt, I more than earned the right to work from home!

My theory, that while some people start at 8 and some at 9, they both leave at 5 because the 8 o’clockers don’t get paid for their lunch hour.

I remember the traffic, I lived about 45 mins from work for many years, you’re right mornings are always worse. I hate traffic, it’s the only thing I don’t miss about living in the sticks!! Yay for being closer to work! I’m not going to tell you how far from work I am now
Just leave that one alone!!! Oh! Like you, we found a place to purchase and are in the 30-45 day period right now with financing. When do/did you start packing? lols.

I remember being in California. A 15 mile commute would take 45-50 minutes. On Friday afternoons, it would take 2 hours (I lived at the crossroads between Vegas and “The River”).
I don’t miss it. AT ALL.

Yep…maybe 10 cars on the way to work. Mostly deer get in the way. Gotta sober up for that if nothing else!

I catch the train because, in Sydney traffic, it would take me well over an hour to drive to work, and then there’d be no parking when I got there. The train also takes an hour, but at least I get to sit quietly and read your blog while someone else does the driving.

Your picture looks like the 405 any time in LA. I used to commute a hour one way to work. That is happily not the case anymore. I now go from my bedroom to the kitchen to my home office … YeeeHaw!!!

I hate to break it to you but no one gets traffic until you live in California. I grew up near NYC and then lived in CA for three years – there is no worse traffic ever at any time of the day.

In my city, peak hour starts at 4:30 and finishes around 7:00, but it’s not quite as congested.

This is awesome, dude. I actually think about my recliner and all of its curves while I am at work. And oh, the way it reclines….. ohhhhhhhhhh
My commute to work is no longer a valid topic of complaint, since I moved to an apartment 4 minutes away from work.
But it used to be a really terrible commute to work and an easy-breezy commute home. But you also have to consider the fact that I go to work anywhere between 4PM and 7PM, when traffic is heavy, and heading back home between 12Am and 3AM, when nobody is on the roads.

I live in London. My commute involves the underground. I leave my house at five to seven and leave from work at four.
I do this for my own sanity because the crowds on the underground and the passive aggression would kill me.

It depends on the day. If there’s an accident in or around the Lincoln tunnel you might as well not even go to work. I leave at the same time each day since I take the bus in. Some I’m early, others I’m on time or I’m 30 mins late for absolutely NO reason. Getting home always seems faster though. Probably becasue I leave 5 mins early to get to my bus quicker.

That’s exactly why I left the big city – 45min commute each way! One radio station had a fabulous morning show – they had “traffic dating hour.” They instructed listeners to look around in traffic, find someone who caught their eye, and call in their license plate number to see if they were single and interested. It was hilarious! That was the only way I got through 3 years of that damn commute!

I am one of those horrible freaks of nature that loves long commutes. More time to sing songs and talk to myself.

I literaly live 11 moiles from work, but it takes me 40 minutes to get there. MY morning traffic is YOUR afternoon traffic because I work overnights. The cool thing is…in the morning after my shift, it takes me 15 minutes to get home! Suck it baby!

I really don’t love traffic and sometimes we don’t expect how late we are because of that traffic.. Anyway, I just love this post here..

I so don’t miss city traffic. I was fortunate in the city anyway as I worked graveyard, so the worst traffic was in the morning, but unless there was an accident, it was still moving. I’ll shut up now before you hit me.

Because I know you live in the cities, I’ll tell you that I live in the extreme NW suburbs (halfway to Lake Mille Lacs), and work in Edina. I hear you – the worst stretch is the Crosstown, and then 494 from about 394 up to Bass Lake Rd. I don’t understand how one day I can make it to work in 45 minutes, but the next day takes and hour and 20 minutes. And FWIW, Thursday nights are MUCH worse than Fridays. Might as well just head over to the ajoining bar and have a few drinks before heading out….cheers!
