Random Thursday Thoughts
Posted by Simple Dude | Posted in Random Simplicity | Posted on 17-05-2012
Today I have a few random thoughts. No, actually they are more like random rants… I haven’t done any bitching in awhile, and need to get a few things off my chest!
I mentioned this on Twitter the other day, but my friend Jewels suggested I write about it in a post. One thing that has been really bugging me lately is people who take photos of themselves while driving to use as profile pictures for Facebook, Twitter or whatever. It’s as if they just hold the phone out and snap a photo – usually of them wearing sunglasses.
I don’t get this trend… can anyone explain it? Please people, stop doing this. It’s stupid. I would rather see you use a profile pic with a clown nose, a black eye or a giant zit on your forehead!
Besides… shouldn’t you be DRIVING?!!?!

One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to social media (bigger than stupid profile pics) is people who write short, leading status updates that are obvious begs for attention, without actually saying anything. I’ll give you a few examples:
“Awesome! I can’t believe that just happened!“
or
“This day really sucks.“
They are begging for attention here – and unfortunately they usually get it with someone asking what’s going on. I say don’t respond, ignore these desperate attempts for attention. If they really have something to say, they will say it first and not go fishing for a response. Who’s with me?

One more rant. Most of the shows I watch on a regular basis I record on my DVR – including reality shows like Survivor and Celebrity Apprentice. This creates a problem for me because every stinkin’ media website likes to SHOUT about who wins these shows the very next day. And they don’t do it inside the article, they do it in the headline.
Why the hell can’t the headline just say “GUESS WHO WON CELEBRITY APPRENTICE?” and make you click through to find out. Noooooo…. instead it has to say “STEVE & CINDY WIN THE AMAZING RACE!” which ruins the suspense for DVR people like me. I thought the purpose of headlines was to entice you to click through, not give you all the info? Morons.
By the way, I have managed to avoid all headlines and articles about who won Survivor – it’s on my DVR and I plan to watch it tonight or tomorrow. So DON’T blow it for me!
Actually I don’t care all that much, this season was one of my least favorites. But still.. seriously.. don’t blow it.
SD

I have a few friend that favor the car shot profile pics. They’re not actually driving when they take the pictures though. They’re usually buckled up still sitting in their driveway. Once the car starts moving the wind might mess up their hair afterall.

@Haven: I am sure some who take these kinds of photos are not actually driving… however, in 90% of the shots they are looking straight forward as if they ARE driving. Which is dumb.
If you’re going to take a self-photo there are so many more interesting places to do it then the drivers seat of a car.

SD – I really don’t know what to tell you about the photos. My daughter has done that with her big sunglasses on but she definitely was not driving when she took it. It was in my driveway.
As for the attention getting lines, I do see that on fb sometimes and I usually don’t answer either way unless its my besties and they usually blabber about it ALOT afterwards before I’ve had a chance to say anything, lol.
As for the shows…well I actually appreciate it sometimes. Example, the other night we thought DWTS was being recorded so we watched House. It was elimination night and it soooo did not even record it. We were devastated so we quickly got online and goggled and found out who was eliminated. Wheew, catastrophy averted because it was our favorite guy and we did not want to see him eliminated.
Now Memphis drivers – that’s enough to make a preacher lose his religion.

Let me first say that all reality TV shows such as Survivor, The Apprentice, and The Amazing Race, should die in a fire.
Okay, now I can say that I totally agree with you on the “driving” pics. Just dumb. I hate all pictures of me and cannot take one like that, whether I’m sitting in my car or at my desk, without thinking, good lord, you look like a moron. Or, wow, you narcissistic… well, you (maybe) get the general idea.

I have a Facebook friend who has tons of pictures with his car, in the driver’s seat, leaned up against it, whatever. I finally asked him if he was having a love affair with his car because he clearly LOVES his ‘stang.

I am not as twitter versed as some and as a result have missed all that stuff. As far as the picture taking thing in the car, I don’t get that at all. It absolutely makes no sense to me. On the headline thing, when you figure out how to avoid hearing about the outcome before viewing the show PLEASE let me know.

I am totally with you on the rant about Facebook status updates that scream “pay attention to me!” I will take this one step further and say that I despise when people post passive-aggressive status updates that are clearly directed at a particular person or situation but they don’t come right out and say it or explain it, leaving the vast majority of their “friends” in the dark. It’s like posting an inside joke where only a select few get the punchline.

Yes, the attention whores that put status updates up like “Why me?” or “Can this day get any better?” drive me nuts. I have several “friends” that do that on Facebook and they are in fact attention whores….

I agree with you on the tv-show news-headlines thing, even though I only watch two TV shows. I just think it’s dumb that “reality” and episodic TV is now headline news. Why not report pro wrestling results on the front of the sports page?

@Cameron: Brilliant comparison! Yes, pro wrestling is as much a news headline as anything that happens on pseudo-reality TV. Lets get back to reporting news!

“people who write short, leading status updates that are obvious begs for attention” going out on a limb here but aren’t all blog posts, tweets, updates, blurps and pings about begging for attention?
p.s. does a blurp exist? i think it should…

I think it is important to periodically put it out there that some things are just not okay. Profile photos from your cell phone while driving in sunglasses is so My Space!
Seriously people this is the Facebook and Twitter decade.
I de-friend people that look for attention like that. Or that post song lyrics! Seriously I know the lyrics I heard it too, or I didn’t and you shouldn’t be taking credit for profound lyrics when you are dumb as a box of rocks!

Those short statuses aren’t even as bad as they get. I saw one the other day that said, “FUCK.”
Tell me that isn’t essentially a cry for attention. GAH.
So annoying.

I have 100% taken those photos but only to send to people with the message “keeping you updated…I’m in traffic” in a totally sarcastic, we are WAY too connected, kinda way. They are seriously annoying. Put down the phone and drive. You are making yourself look ridiculous. I’m pretty sure I have a couple shots like that in my personal facebook page for purely tongue in cheek reasons.
PS-thanks for the shout out.

Couldn’t agree with you more on every single point you made here.
Although for the last one, I must say that I am usually about a month or two behind in catching up on reality shows, so I really do stand no chance in terms of not having the winner revealed.

Those attention seeking tweets/status updates are just like headlines, designed to prompt the reader to respond. Too bad the headlines are now quite often giving away the ‘punch line’. Perhaps one day the attention seekers will follow suit, and give the whole story so ppl don’t have to ask. Hopefully not though, because most of us don’t care to know.

My daughter has a habit of posting those types of status updates and she does it just so to see who will ask what is wrong even if there is nothing wrong…….I like you find them annoying………….as for taking your photo while driving wouldn’t a photo of your smashed up car make a cool profil pic………..or you laying on the road with a sheet covering your body………..lol

I totally agree with all your peeves. And I hate the passive aggressive vague references meant to be seen through, that a commenter mentioned also. Like, let me insult this person without you being able to call me on it or them being able to defend themselves.

I tried to take a picture of myself while driving once. Didn’t turn out very well. I almost crashed into a garbage bin. Lesson learned.
Posted on: May/19/2012@2:42 am
Car thing I agree with. I don’t use my camera unless someone else is driving and I dont love myself enough to use the out of focus just gone around a corner pic as a profile pic.
Facebook thing, I beg to differ. I think people should be free to write status as they want. Your choice whether to respond or not. If it annoys you, then block the feed of the person who is irritating you. I dare say that you are looking for interaction when you post on all these social networks. After all, why else would you be on twitter and facebook.
Lastly, if you find the spoilers annoying, just imagine how those of us who don’t even get the opportunity to watch the show at the time it is aired in your country feel. At least you choose to watch it later. We often have to wait weeks already knowing the result

I agree with pretty much everything you say.
People are so dumb these days..Good thing we’re here to blog about it.
