My Nightly Conflict
Posted by Simple Dude | Posted in TV | Posted on 27-03-2012
There seems to be an issue between my Lady Friend and I. This is something I first recognized years ago when we started dating but it kind of went away and didn’t seem to be a problem. Then when I moved in with her in 2010, it appeared once again.
For the first six months of living together we were able to laugh about it, assuming it would go away in time. But lately I am starting to think there is a fundamental compatibility difference between us that may never go away, forcing one of us to make compromises that go against our beliefs.
Our DVR habits are completely different.
I may not be the most organized person in other areas of my life (my desk at work could audition for an episode of Hoarders) but when it comes to my DVR I do things strictly by the book.

Story of my life...
Here is what I mean… when it comes to the episodic shows I watch regularly, I scroll down to watch the oldest show in the list first, always watching programs in chronological order. So in other words I watch shows recorded on Monday before I’ll watch shows recorded on Wednesday. I have to, it’s the way I’m wired.
And if I get behind and have two episodes of one show recorded and only one of another, I have to watch one of the two episodes I recorded, before watching the single one regardless of the days they were recorded. Following me?
My Lady Friend on the other hand will open the DVR list and choose which show to watch all willy-nilly style based on what she feels like. Sometimes that’s the oldest show, sometimes it’s a show that was just recorded an hour ago.
This is all well and good for the shows we each watch separately, but we watch at least half the shows we record together…. and it always leads to remote control drama.
Before you start ripping on me, I know that I am the weird one here. It would be better to be able to just watch whatever the hell I want, but it’s not who I am.
Even though much of my life is chaotic, spontaneous and spur of the moment, my TV watching is not. I just HAVE to watch my shit in order.
It is what it is.
SD

You’re my DVR soul mate!
Recorded shows MUST be watched in order. If there are two of one, those episodes need to be watched first because clearly I’m more behind on that show. Everything you said is entirely correct and not at all weird.
Personally, I’m very behind on everything at the moment.

I am totally with you on this!!

For How I Met Your Mother, willy nilly is ok. But something like Game of Thrones? House of Lies? That’ll just fuck shit up. Has to HAS TO be in order.
I’m with you, SD. Bros unite!

My girlfriend does this kind of thing when we read to each other. She has some kind of special consecutive order in which she likes to read the pages, and gets annoyed whenever I try to introduce my own system.

I’m the same way. Well… when I had a DVR. You can’t just watch a random show without seeing what happened before, that’s how confusion starts. You’ll be all like, why is so and so being such a dick this week? Well, if you had watched last week’s episode, you’d know.
You’re not weird, that’s perfectly normal… unless I’m weird too, ah nevermind.
Posted on: Mar/27/2012@9:52 am
I should clarify… I don’t just watch them in order if they are the same episode. Sure, if I have two Sons of Anarchy I’ll watch the oldest one first.
But if I have a Sons of Anarchy which was recorded on a Tuesday and a 30 Rock which was recorded on a Thursday. I will always watch the Sons of Anarchy first because chronologically it was recorded first.
That’s where the frictions comes in with the Lady Friend!

Ahhhh… I agree with the gf. I have a couple episodes of The Mentalist out there yet yesterday when I turned on the TV I wanted to watch Mad Men and Shamless instead! I watch based on my mood!

You are not weird, you sound just like me in the TV viewing department. You cannot watch TV episodes out of order, it goes against the laws of nature
.
I’m just lucky that my husband feels the exact same way I do when it comes to the DVR.

LAWD, I could NEVAH watch anything out of order. That would put my whole OCD patterned life into a tail spin and I would need some serious therapy to recover.

Be not afraid grasshopper. I too insist on watching the shows in order. However my man friend doesn’t really care what order we watch them in. He hands the remote to me, as a good man should, and allows me to watch whatever I like in whatever order I like.
This is where you must learn grasshopper. As the woman she has the right to do things as she sees fit. You should accept that the estrogen in her blood makes her smarter, wiser, and more functional that the testosterone in your blood.
Be strong and let her do things as she likes. I bet if you explain your frustration she might even succumb to your improper method and follow it for the sake of peace a quiet, you big whiner! LOL

Both styles have their own merit. However I would come down on your side as my wife finds it amusing that I start asking when she is going to watch something she recorded 3 weeks ago as I hate the memory getting full. She doesn’t know how to fill a dishwasher properly either.

I watch whatever I am in the mood to watch, though I almost never watch TV. I am with Lady Friend. There is order in my life, but TV watching isn’t one of them.

Dude, I’m partially with you. I believe in watching a show in order, largely because the shows which I enjoy often have a carryover plot. But I am simply not in the mood for NCIS and want to watch House or Big Bang Theory. My wife and I will typically watch things together if we are both interested.
Don’t let it get to you. There are way bigger things to quarrel about like which side of the bed you’ll make whoopee on.

Is there an instruction set for Whoopie WilyGuy?
Just like Ikea I always have parts left over.
But I have to watch things in order. My girlfriend has never seen Star Wars and have been watching them all over the last few weeks. We Started at Star Wars IV: A new hope. Because that is where it starts!

Ok I am a mix of you and your lady friend meaning that I like to watch shows in order like you but at the same time I will look through the list and pick a show but I have to watch the show epps in order meaning if I am watching say “Bones” I can not watch Wednesdays eppisode before I see Tuesday’s eppisode that is just me I do not like to watch shows out of order………..and yes I know some shows it really doesn’t matter but I just can’t do it it doesn’t feel right…………I also can not start watching a show half way through it which hubby does all the time that is just annoying I need to see the show from the start. I also like to have subtitles on if I can’t understand what is being said much to hubbys annoyance

Well, I’m with you there Brother.
I was exactly the same in a lot of things when I was dating my current wife. Some things just led to relationship choas while others sailed along smoothly.
That’s just the differences between people I’m afraid.
The easiest thing would be to simply buy another TV and get headphones for each of you – problem solved

No way, SHE’S the weird one. How can you record a series and watch the episodes in any order you want? It ruins it! Unless she’s watching a show like The Brady Bunch where they’re all self contained episodes. But even then, she’s likely have old episodes sitting there for months before she gets to them. I’m on your side.

That makes good sense. But of course I’m guilty of just picking something on there. THough half of the shiz on our DVR is something like Family Guy or the likes. So it doesn’t matter anyway. Don’t mess with my Walking Dead though. Im the same way witht that!

Ha! I will never have that problem because I don’t know what a DVR is. I assume, based on your post, that it has something to do with a television, which I don’t watch.

I dont let hubby near the DVR. He has enough toys of his own

I have that same problem with my brother. Except ours lead to blood baths. And possible injured pets.
Civilians should not get in the way of remote control throwing wars.

Dude I’m the same way. Don’t have DVR (don’t hate, I’m in college) but I find specific episodes on Hulu, and I’ll jump from show to show online to keep everything sorted to its proper day.
